All small dogs go to heaven
November 3rd, 2006
Today marks the anniversary of Russian Space Dog Laika’s voyage into space aboard the Sputnik II. Sadly, she perished after only a few hours into the trip. I never thought much about the incident untilreading Jeanette Winterson’s Weight. The story isn’t about her but does feature her. As an aside, The Arcade Fire also have a song named after her. I get really sad when I think of this terrified pup being hurtled into space at speeds no dog should ever be forced to travel. She was launched into space November 3, 1957. The Sputnik II didn’t fall out of orbit until April 14, 1958, upon which it burned up as it re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere.
RIP Laika.
