The other day I was walking down the street and saw a woman walking two large dogs. Each dog was wearing human clothing. The one had on an orange vest and the other was wearing what to me looked like a Member’s Only jacket. Big dogs are so crazy!

I have another very important (and adorable) small dog to introduce you to today. Weighing in at 4lbs, he recently celebrated his first birthday and is slated to take home the smalldog-lightweight-deliciousness championship of the world. I present to you…Wilbur the Toy Fox Terrier. His owner tells me, “by the size of him you would think he’s so quiet and fragile, but believe it or not he is the one who picks on his brothers which are bigger than him! Wilbur’s favorite thing to do is pose for pictures which are later turned into photo greeting cards and sent out to his relatives for the holidays.”

This is a really cute story: Cat Adopts Abandoned Puppy.
Stella (Chico’s owner) wanted me to let everyone know about an important event that happens every Saturday in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn, NY. In case you are in the market to adopt a small dog, or other pet, stop by this event. Here are the details:
Saturday, February 17
Salem Lutheran Church
67th Street (Ovington Ave) between 4th & 5th Avenue
From 12 noon to 4pm
Cats, Dogs, Kittens and Pups.
Also to those in the NY area, Chico is about to get a taste of fame. He will be present for the taping of a special doggie segment this Wednesday, February 14 at 9am on the Mike & Julia show on Fox 5. Look for him!

This morning has been so busy, I’ve hardly had a moment to even think about small dogs. Blasphemous, I know!
Yesterday on the news, I heard a report that a dog antidepressant was just approved by the FDA. the NY Post reports, RX to Get Mutts Out of Rutts. The FDA approved Reconcile to be used with dogs in-connection with behavior counseling. Back in January, it was reported that Jennifer Love Hewitt had to put her pup on Prozac after fighting constant panic attacks. Before you go investing in medication for your small dog, why not try out the services of a dog psychologist/communicator. In 1971, Penelope Smith started processing emotional and psychological trauma’s with pets. From what I can gather form her website, she has worked with clients like this:

Perhaps, if owners sent their pups to puppy kindergarten small dogs wouldn’t be so traumatized!
On that note, I want to introduce everyone to a very special 2 1/2-year old Shiztsu named Jack. His owner Michael tells me that Jack is a very affectionate and quirky pup. Two very interesting details about Jack, #1 he “will lick the inside of your hands for hours and has never been observed to stop unless one pulls away first,” and #2 “unlike other Shiztsu’s, he has a tendency to waddle, laterally, while he walks, resembling a duck.” Put on your gloves and put your hands together for Jack:

I have received many responses from folks would like me to feature his/her small dog(s) on here. It may take me a few days to get back in touch with everyone but I want you to know, I really appreciate the responses and the small dog enthusiasm!
The Westminster Kennel Club’s 131st dog show is currently underway in New York City. You can watch it tonight and tomorrow on the USA Network at 8pm ET.

There have been so many disturbing small dog thefts lately! Do you think it’s because small dogs are 100% delicious? I find this headline particularly disturbing, Man Wakes From 8 Month Coma, Thieves Steal Puppy. “His family says she was the one thing motivating him to walk again after the coma left him without use of his legs.” His family is offering $1,000 reward for her return. Here’s a photo:

Dog Art Fetches Top Prices. What a misleading headline! I assumed they meant art created by dogs. They are referring to paintings and portraits of dogs. Not that I am complaining, it’s just not as spectacular. Cashing in on this puppy art explosion, Christie’s is having it’s first dog art auction which, mark your calendars, will take place June 22.

Today’s post is dedicated to others that are out there doing ground-breaking small dog work.
Take for example, Costume Dogs. This is THE place to go for a comprehensive study of dogs in costumes. I particularly like the rating system, though I cannot fathom how this adorable pup only garnered 3.64 stars!

Another stellar site from the “dogs in costumes” genre is Bee Dogs. Bee Dogs is the new black!
Also, here’s an in-depth article detailing the highs and lows of Puppy Bowl III. How very astute to notice the “foolish coaching move to put all three Samoyeds on the field at the same time.”

What’s with large birds taking small dogs? Is it because they are 100% delicious?
Here’s a quick guide to keeping your small dogs warm in the winter. I think tip #4 is highly overlooked, “regardless of coat length, many dogs also need boots in cold weather. If your dog frequently lifts up his paws, whines or stops during walks, it is communicating that its feet are uncomfortably cold. Be sure to get your dog used to wearing boots before the cold weather sets in.”

I want to introduce everyone to a very special Chihuahua named Chico! This 5-year old Brooklyn native lives with his companion Stella (who happens to run an animal rescue and placement service called Leader of the Pack!). Stella wrote to me indicating that her Chihuahua is “very photogenic.” I was skeptical, of course, but the photos below serve as scientific fact! I bet he had to turn down many runway offers for this month’s Fashion Week. Stella also told me that Chico is “charming, lovable and very comical. He is quite friendly and loves attention, especially belly rubs.”
Ladie’s & Gentlemen, please welcome to the stage, Chico!

I recently saw a story about a pet washing machine. You can watch a video of it on BBC’s website. Personally, I think it looks like a sadistic, torture device. The clip I saw featured a cat and was reminiscent of the electrocution/anti-smoking device in Cat’s Eye!
This Jack Russell doesn’t look so miserable, i guess:

If you are going to bother with the dog washing machine, I suggest investing in one of these:

Two week old Mixie Moo, must have been inspired by these when her head became trapped in a washing machine. She was at home playing with her 11 brothers and sisters when the unfortunate event happened. Firemen had to come and saw the machine to pieces in order to free her from its grasp.
Also worth noting today, Bruiser, a Black Lab puppy, went and pulled a Baby Jessica on us. Puppy pulled from well. Luckily, he’s doing just fine.

I tried to write a lengthy post detailing the jawesomeness of Puppy Bowl III, but it somehow got lost in the netherworld of the WordPress archives. Perhaps others will share thoughts and memories in an attempt to recreate the scene. Or, maybe you just had to be there. In brief:

Please take note of Marcia’s amazing sweatshirt, a tribute to Miss Dogmerica herself, Holly:

Here’s a photo of us watching small dogs watch Puppy Bowl III:

Prior to the big game Marcia and I watched The World’s Ugliest Dog competition, an unfortunate name for a spectacular event. Archie, in his hairless, toothless glory, took home the title.

I am in the middle of reading this now, but if you get the chance you should check out an article featured in the NY Times, The Modern Kennel Conundrum. It’s all about designer dog breeds. On the first page they mention Chugs, a breed that caused much speculation and discussion at Puppy Bowl III.

Apparently, there’s a Dog Actor’s Guild (DAG). It’s funny because I just applied to a program with the Director’s Guild of America (DGA). Coincidence? I don’t think so.
Here’s Howie, the brooding young actor, his skill-set includes: on command: sit up and beg, wave, touch specified object, put his head down, give high five & down low, twirl around 360, roll over, weave thru objects, crawl, lie on his back, speak & agility training.

Fighting the good fight, actor Mickey Rourke protests a South Beach Miami pet store. “Rourke said he bought a dog from Hot Dogs Puppies Inc. and a few days later, the puppy died from a virus. About a dozen other people have had the same problem over the past few months with sick puppies, Rourke told the media while protesting in front of the store.” Small dogs = 1, Terrorists = 0!

This headline is unbelievable! He’s the beast! Ex-con drops pup down 7th-floor chute , “A puppy tossed down a garbage chute from the seventh-floor was rescued alive by cops…’The trash was knee-deep on the floor. Rats were running everywhere, and then we saw him. He was encased in garbage, surrounded by bottles, food and the metal edges of cans, and just looked like he wanted to say, ‘Hello everybody.’ It could have been a terrible death.’…Hines told officers that before Blow tossed the dog they were arguing because she refused to provide him a place to stay after his recent release from jail. Blow, 26, was arrested Monday and charged with torturing and injuring an animal, abandonment of a disabled animal and carrying an animal in a cruel manner. ‘It’s my property and I can do what I want with it,’ cops quoted him as saying after his arrest.”
Shame on you Anthony Hines! What kind of person does that?
