As promised, here are some photos of Buster from this past weekend.

As you can see, he’s a bit more “rough” than some of the other dogs featured on this site. I am fairly certain he did not spend his weekend reading the Unbearable Lightness of Being but her does speak English and Hungarain, which is more than I can say for myself.
Here in America, we want no child left behind, and in Toronto, Canada they want no dog poop left behind. They are filled with CRAZY ideas in Canada, how about this one, composting dog poop and perhaps turning it into bio-fuel in Vancouver! What year do they think it is, 2007?
Is anyone going to see Year of the Dog? I am undecided.
In non-small dog related news, I am sad to report that Kurt Vonnegut died today.

Fiza alerted me to this article in the NY Times Magazine concerning dog shelters. I honestly haven’t had a chance to read it yet but will get on that soon!
I wish I could write more, but I have to keep this brief. Wasn’t all the Mommy Dearest talk enough entertainment for a few days?

With the summer almost upon us, you might need to get a life vest for your small dog. Do note: it’s not recommended for short legged breeds!
Stewart (and Joan) have really done it again. Yesterday, Joan sent me these absolutely amazing photos of Stewart. Doesn’t he look smart and sophisticated? Joan indicated that Stewart spent his holiday weekend reading. I bet he’s reading the Unbearable Lightnes of Being, a favorite of mine! Joan, what in fact is he reading?

Small dog genetics have been all over the news! There has been some discussion about shrinking down big dogs to make them miniature sized, but conversely does this mean that soon we will be able to create Rottweiler sized Chihuahuas? Or Yorkies the size of Great Danes? Blasphemy!

An international team of scientists have uncovered a mutation in a single gene that is responsible for determining a dog’s body size.
In other news, I appreciate the lively conversation regarding privacy and cohabitation. One thing that did not come up is privacy and small dog cohabitation. When it comes to small dogs, privacy and cohabitation, small dogs should never have separate bedrooms and should always sleep together like this:

There is seriously something wrong with Lindsay Lohan. During a recent interview with GQ Magazine, (which took place on her blackberry!), she was asked about playing poker and admitted: “I just emailed my friend sara pantera saying I’m going to start playing poker again! I bought two puppies today!” She should be banned from puppy ownership. Is there a way we can make that happen?
In other news, Dogs May Lead Doctors to Discover Why People Get Cancer. I don’t like this one bit, dogs being used for medical experimentation. Can’t they use people like Lindsay Lohan for that? I think there must be some kind of direct link in her gene pool. No?

There is yet another act of dog heroism in the news today! This time Taca, an 11-year old Chihuahua came to his owner, 80-year old Lillian Davis’ rescue after she blacked out in the middle of the night and required medical care. Courageous little Taca alerted her husband William, who was sleeping in his own room ACROSS THE HALL. They dashed to the scene, found Lillian face down on the floor and alerted 911. Way to go Taca! Taca has uncovered an interesting, and perhaps controversial topic of discussion…older couples and separate bedrooms. I am all in favor of this phenomenon, old or young. Growing up, my Aunt Crosia and Uncle Frank slept in separate twin beds in their summer bedroom, because it was too hot in their front bedroom during the warmer months. Not quite the same thing as separate bedrooms but totally understandable, people do what they have to do in order to get by. Personally, I have a great appreciation for having access to private and personal space and think this would be and essential component for long term cohabitation with another person. How do you weigh in?
Speaking of corageous pups. Wheeled cart helps puppy gain mobility. Found along the roadside, Trooper was born with backwards elbows and learned to cope by walking on his back legs and front elbows. After a community rallied to raise money for his transporation cart, he’s now up and running. I love stories like this.

What kind of person goes ahead and throws away a perfectly good Chihuahua? It is reported that, “you can see in his eyes just how much he’s been through…from his little t-shirt to painted toenails, clearly this was someone’s pet.”

There is nothing I love more than small dogs, but there are two things that come close, and those dear Smalldogarific readers, are you and your contributions! I am honored when people write in sharing their thoughts, comments and small dogs. Abby in Philly contacted me with these amazing small dog photos.

It has pained me that it has taken me so long to share what I am about to share with you, I must admit I loved being out of town but it surely has taken its toll on Smalldogarific. I didn’t want to rush things while I was away and do a disservice to this truly remarkable small dog. Bella was found on the mean, hard streets of Manhattan. She was emaciated, scared and not in good shape. Bella was nursed back to health by her new family and is now strong and turning 2 years old this year. I am told that Bella is a regular at the dog runs and that is a very popular dog with many friends, both human and canine. Apparently, last year she even passed her canine good citizen test. I have no idea what that is but I do know this…Bella is a pup that is destined for great things. I am sure some of you amongst us want to be doctors, lawyers, rockstars and firemen when you grow up. Bella has proven that all of these things are possible no matter where you come from! Open your heart with the key and please welcome, BELLA!
