Sadly, I missed the 11th annual Weiner Dog Races! How sad. Thankfully, there’s a comprehensive photo album of the event. This event is open to dachshunds of all shapes, sizes and mobility (weiner dogs on wheels are welcomed to enter).

Cujo may have given dogs a bad name, but the truth is that cats are the real trouble makers when it comes to rabies. “As 45 countries celebrated the first World Rabies Day Saturday to draw attention to the world’s leading rabies culprit — dogs — the United States faces a larger problem from domestic cat breeds.” I can’t believe I missed World Rabies Day too!
Congratulations to Baby Girl & Golden Boy on their recent nuptials. The ceremony went something like this (SERIOUSLY):
“In the shade of a tree decorated with doggy biscuits, the furry couple exchanged bracelets and blessings.”
“Do you take Baby Girl to be your only bitch?” He did.
“Do you take Golden Boy to be your only stud?” She did.
“I now pronounce you stud and bitch,” Rabbi Woof said. “You may now smell each other.”

Jane Balogh, the woman who in an act of civil disobedience registered her dog to vote, has reached a deal with the county. “Under the settlement approved by King County District Court Judge Mariane Spearman, Balogh, 66, must perform 10 hours of community service, pay $240 in court costs and not commit any other crimes in the next year. The misdemeanor charge will be dismissed after one year if she complies with those conditions.” I repeat, what do we want? SMALL DOGS! When do we want them? NOW!

Around 200 dogs had the chance to take over a water park in Carmel, Indiana, before it was drained for the summer. What a sight that must’ve been! Two words, lazy river!
Paris, a “TINY,” 12-week-old Jack Russell puppy was not in attendance.
Small dog mommies take note, a mother in Freemont, California, stashed her baby in a trash can to protect it from attack, after she was mauled by a bull terrier.

It looks like Leona Helmsley’s dog Trouble might end up with the same reputation as her mother. Helmsley’s left custody of Trouble to her brother Alan Rosenthal, but yesterday, he revealed that he doesn’t want her. I bet Leona is turning in her grave. And, to all prospective suitors, I forgot to mention yesterday that Leona Helmsley’s dog Trouble is being sued for some for of that cool $12 million. Zamfira Sfara, a former housekeeper for Leona has already tried (unsuccessfully) to sue Helsmley’s over a previously infected bite from Trouble. This is a reality show waiting to happen. I am sure they can figure out a way to work in Danny Lynn, and make it an instant hit!

Steve alerted me to the Whoopi Goldberg/Michael Vick controversy. Apparently, she decided to use to her new post on the view to defend Michael Vick’s attrocious dog fighting antics. Goldberg said on the show, “he’s from the South, from the Deep South … This is part of his cultural upbringing.”
Dear Whoopi,
While I think it is important to consider how people are raised and socialied and how this may influence and dictate their actions, I simply don’t agree.
Best,

Dog Mommies are becoming a growing trend in Japan. “Dogs now outnumber children aged 10 and under in Japan — there were 13.1 million dogs in 2006…For Horikoshi, sharing her life with dogs instead of babies is an active choice. She divorced her husband who had asked her to follow Japanese tradition and become a stay-at-home mum; she wanted to pursue her career. Her current partner has to accept that her dogs and her work are at the center of her life.” What do we want? SMALL DOGS! When do we want them? NOW!

Hello, my dear Smalldogarific readers! Did everyone enjoy their holiday weekend? I do hope that everyone have put away their white linen pants and covered up the barbecue by now. Is everyone ready for back to school? Pencils sharpened? Shirts ironed? Good.

If you are looking to marry rich, Trouble, the recently departed Leona Helmsley’s Maltese, might be the richest small dog in America? Helmsely left Trouble a $12 million trust fund. Picture it, the wedding of the century! In her will, the “Queen of Mean” also directed that, “when my dog, Trouble, dies, her remains shall be buried next to my remains in the Helmsley mausoleum.” It is worth noting that Helmsley left nothing to two of her four grandchildren for, “reasons that are known to them.”

Maddy, a Chihuahua (she’s actually part poodle) from New York City has been named the fastest Chihuahua in the US. She won the title by traveling 35-feet in just two seconds, leaving 14 other competitors choking on her dust. I initially, misread the headline and thought it said fattest Chihuahua in the US, a sight, I was much looking forward to seeing. Either way, Maddy is quite the catch. She understands English and Mandarin, and is an aggressive eater. Maddy’s owner Sue Yee said that Maddy’s success was bases on “lots of love and intense training, including sprinting, racing up stairs and swimming.” To all you Brooklynites, apparently, she’s a regular at the dog beach in Prospect Park. Does anyone else hear wedding bells?
