Thumper, a dog in Greenville, Maine is credited with saving his owner after a fire engulfed his home. Get this, the first marshal investigator believes that the fire was actually started by the owner’s cat Princess, tipped over a kerosene lantern. Luckily everyone escape safely, but Princess did get her tail singed by flames.

This is not exactly small dog news but, it was love at first sight for a kitten and golden retriever in Virginia. As the story goes, Jimmy Martin was out working his concrete lorry when a stray kitten appeared. Martin took the kitten home and it developed a particular fondness for his dog Honey. Honeys tarted spontaneously producing milk after hearing the kitten’s cries.

Not only does J.K. Rowling write ridiculously good and addictive books but she also loves dogs!
Congrats to Montel Williams on his new marriage. His one-year old toy poodle Max played an important role in the wedding service and served as the couple’s ring bearer, “Max, with the aid of a strategically placed pillow harness, carted the rings down the aisle.” Thanks to Jeanne for that bit of info.

Police in Oklahoma are cracking down on small dogs in big cars. Buster better stay far, far away from Oklahoma!
It turns out, children’s toys aren’t the only things that may be hazardous. Carol Wine, an Akron, Ohio woman, felt a prick on her finger, while playing tug of war with her English Bulldog CandiCane, and was horrified to find a needle inside the dog toy. The event has been particularly traumatizing for Wine, the article describes how she “can’t get the image out of her head of a sweatshop worker afraid to tell her boss that he or she lost a needle while making the reindeer.”

Did you know that October is Adopt-A-Dog Month?? And, yesterday was World Animal Day.
Not only is Disney allegedly responsible for employing child-labor and deplorable working conditions, but now, they may be indirectly responsible for the neglect of dogs!

A miniature wire-haired dachshund made a big discovery in the UK. While on strolling the beaches of Dunwich, Suffolk Dasiy came upon the giant fossilized bone of a woolly mammoth. “It was obvious that it was some sort of bone and my first thought was that it might be from something like a mammoth. Daisy looked quite pleased with herself, even though it was far too heavy for her to pick up. She loves gnawing on bones and always has the leftover lamb leg bone from our Sunday roast.” This proves, not only do small dogs single handedly combat global warming, but they are groundbreaking palaeontologists!
In an effort to add salt to her still fresh wounds, PETA is urging Kevin Federline to also take custody of Britney’s small dogs.
And, it turns out that children are just asking for it.

It was a typical story of like mother like daughter at the national finals of the Incredible Dog Challenge. Ranked amongst the world’s greatest in the heptathlon, Olympic medal winner and world record holder Jackie Joyner Kersee and her child prodigy greyhound Cindy, participated in in the challenge that took place in St Louis, Missouri, Saturday Sept 29th. Prior to the competition, Joyner Kersey said, “I’m coaching Cindy, the world record holder, in the high jump. She’s going to be jumping over a replica of the St Louis arch and it’s just exciting. I’m excited and I can’t wait to give her tips on, to make her much better, because she’s a greyhound. But she has all the power and I’m just glad to be here.” Jackie, we are glad to have you here (and your little dog Cindy too).

Two women came to the rescue of a 17-year old Yorkie named Bobby after they discovered the aged pup being tossed back and forth by two “young people.” Bobby went missing Saturday during a garage sale at his owner’s home. His owner, Bill Hardy, said he believes three teenage boys were involved, and one of the boys distracted Hardy by asking about a lamp for sale while the other two took the dog. It just goes to show that you can’t turn your back for a minute! Always one eye looking at, one eye looking for!

A recent article asks the essential question, cat or dog, which is better for the planet. The answer, according to Rodney van der Ree, senior ecologist at the Australian Research Centre for Urban Ecology, “…I would have to say that in terms of predation at least, cats are the worst offenders.” It’s official then, not only are small dogs magical, they are proven to reduce global warming! Al Gore missed that important fact in his movie.
Last night, police were called to a home in Porirua, New Zealand to deal with a “domestic incident.” The male resident wasn’t having it, and after sicking his dog on the police, who ended up firing at the pup 12 times and missing, he attempted to attach with bottles and a tomahawk.
Michael Vick’s dogs, “will be placed with families or put in a ‘sanctuary.’” And by “sanctuary” do they mean the big farm up in the sky?

It’s a girl, it’s a girl!!! There’s been an upset for the title of world’s smallest dog in height, measuring in at 4 inches tall, Boo Boo, a long-coat chihuahua, has unseated Ducky, a smooth coated chihuahua, who now seems like a giant at 4.9 inches tall. A letter dated September 10, 2007, from the Guinness Book of World Records, confirmed Boo Boo’s new title. Lana Elswick, Boo Boo’s owner, sent me the above photo and I wanted to share its magnificence with all of you. Lana, do you have to special order Boo Boo’s clothing?

Not only is Elmwood, the “world’s ugliest dog” but he loves greyhounds too.The controversial fire hydrant that was recently pulled from a dog park in Oregon, has been reinstalled. The hydrant, painted with the likeness of an American flag, was already surrounded by prickly shrubbery but now has the added security of a fence, to keep pooches away. The good old USA may want to close its borders, but not to Caribbean dogs.It turns out that Leona wasn’t the only “witch of Wall Street.”I’ll drink to that:
