I am truly touched by the support for small dog alopecia. Small dog alopecia awareness is essential if we want to save small dogs like this:

Here’s a quite severe case:

I posted this as a headline yesterday, but in case you didn’t notice, I wanted to bring everyone’s attention to the news that Yorkshire Terriers were voted the #2 purebred dog in the US. Labradors were voted #1, clearly this is a terrorist conspiracy.

Today’s Small Dog Headlines:
Dog Rescued After Being Buried Alive: “PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) — Whimpers a man heard while doing yard work turned out to be a dog buried alive in a neighbor’s backyard. Robbie Wilson said he peaked over his fence and saw the dog’s nose poking out of the ground Sunday, a day after he first heard the cries for help. It was not known how long the dog was buried.”

Small dog hair loss is a very serious problem. Also known as alopecia, it seems to particularly affect bulldogs, see photos below. Here’s a quick guide to what might be causing your small dog’s hair loss.
Please check out i like dirt, for a more comprehensive photo study of this affliction.

Fellow small dog admirer Steve tried to post this photo as a comment but was unable to:

I can’t believe Steve knows someone who owns this dog. This pug barely qualifies as a small dog. I think we need to have an intervention! I am applying for a Fullbright immediately. Intensive study.
Today’s Small Dog Headlines:

Today’s post is inspired by this headline: Too much puppy love can turn into unwanted pounds. “When Kai was 3 months old, he was a chubby puppy because he was getting so many treats as rewards for his good behavior. Although his owner very carefully cut his treats in half until he shed his baby fat, she said it was difficult.”
Dear Nana:
Stop feeding Buster so many treats. Animal crackers are not low in sugar and good for his teeth. We are all well aware of the fact that you feed him endless treats to brainwash him into your unyielding servitude. It’s not nice or fair.
Do you want him to look like this???

Okay, okay, so that’s a trick question.

Some very exciting news to report…New dog kilts come without underwear, “ALTADENA, Calif., Jan. 11 In keeping with Scottish tradition, new kilts soon to be marketed for male dogs by an Altadena, Calif., company will not be sold with underwear.” They are the creation of Chi Wow Wow. Prior to reading about this new dog kilt (please note the photo above is NOT from Chi Wow Wow), I was unfamiliar with the company. You should definitely check out their website. The company Chairman is a Chihuahua named Elvis: “At age 8, Elvis put his wanderlust to rest and became the inspiration and icon behind Chi WOW WOW vintage pet apparel. He leads a busy life overseeing his company and fashioning hip clothing for dogs. When not making high-powered decisions, Elvis enjoys blogging, sleeping, schmoozing and sleeping some more.” Here is a photo:

They have some of the cutest dog outfits and carriers around. In addition to their clothing collection, they help animals, so support them!
Can someone get me one of these (small dog included)?

I want to bring everyone’s attention to two articles I discovered today, Dangers Of Eating Dog Meat Revealed and Wok the Dog: What’s wrong with eating man’s best friend?. I cannot speak for other places in the world, but living in a country where the faucets practically spew ground beef and protein shakes, I can’t see how anyone in the US could condone eating a dog. Being a dog lover and a vegetarian it wouldn’t even occur to me, but in case anyone was thinking about it, don’t do it! As of 2002 it was still legal in 44 states. I will have to look into the current status.

I have seen quite a few English Bulldogs out and about these days. I have to stop myself from throwing my body to the ground and rolling around on the sidewalk with them. Growing up, my family had three English bulldogs. Taurus, Tootsie and Angelo. Angelo is the only one I remember. One winter, he jumped in my family’s pool and sunk to the bottom. My step-father had to jump in an rescue him. Soon after that he went to live with my grandparents and then to live with a “nice family on a farm.”
I never understand when people say that bulldogs are ugly. They are seriously the cutest, most loveable small dogs around, ok , so some aren’t so small. Either way, in honor of English Bulldogs:

Loyal and astute smalldogarific reader Joan has posed another essential question. “How do you feel about cats?” While I am not prepared to make an official smalldogarific statement concerning my feelings about cats, I will say this, cats are no small dogs, or even large dogs, or wolves for that matter. Let me share a story…I recently moved, part of what motivated me to move was a feral cat that was living in my old apartment, he posed as any old domestic house cat, but oh no dear sir, I was onto his evil baby-smothering ways, he was a wild, untamed beast! One of my roommates at the time took in a stray that ended up being pregnant. Since it was the middle of the winter we couldn’t turn her back onto the cold hard streets of Brooklyn, so instead, she moved in. She was an affectionate and nice cat, as far as cats go, but I should have known something was terribly awry when she chose to give birth to a litter of 4 in the middle of my kitchen during a dinner party I was hosting. As we nibbled on bread and cheese we were moved by the miracle of cat life and each of us even commented on how the tiny runt with a white face was the cutest. As weeks passed, the cats were adopted and moved on, but white-face stuck behind and ended up being adopted by my roommate. People always claim that cats are clean and self-sufficient but white-face proved otherwise. I could have lived with the constant meowing, cat hair and need for love and affection but I drew the line at cat urine and feces, in the tub, on the floor, everywhere. I do not like them on a train, I do not like them in a box, I will not eat them with a fox, I do not like them in a house, I would not, could not, with a mouse. Not on a train. Not in a box. Not with a fox. Not in a house. Not with a mouse. Please note, I am talking about cat urine and feces here. I went away for the summer and received an email from my other roommate saying that the cat had shit in the drier. What a beast! I hope that answers your question Joan!
Oh, and as for magents.

Also, did anyone read yesterday’s Dog Lady column? In the new year, Martha has resolved to meet a guy. One of the most promising candidates has a Scottie but “since childhood, I’ve been afraid of small snarly dogs, but this guy must be proud of his dog because he poses with it on Match.com. I do like dogs, but I don’t like the looks of this one.” Shame on you Martha!
