Have you been jet-setting around town with your pup and had to contend with bouts of small dog car sickness? Do you and your small dog enjoy the top down, sunglasses on and hair whipping in the wind? Well, this column (Ask Dr. Jill) gives some important advice on how to deal with a car sick pup. She suggests placing “your dog in the car without starting the engine and give him treats or praise him…After several days, move on to starting the engine, driving in and out of the driveway, then around the block, etc…” I get terrible motion sickness when reading in a moving vehicle, maybe I should have someone take me out like this?

A tell all article about a man in China describes, in great detail, the agony that ensued when an Liu Lin shaved their dog Si Si, to make him more comfortable for the summer. Si Si was far from pleased and “has been making this known to Liu by hiding under the sofas, beds and tables and by eating very little.” It is said that he is now under a vet’s care. The article is truly compelling and is a touching portrait of the small dog as a young man. What? Exactly.
Also, coming to us from China. A man in central China bit a dog to death while rescuing his own puppy from the animal. Geng was out patrolling his watermelon fields when he spotted a large dog holding his puppy in its mouth. Geng threw several watermelons at the large dog but his attempts were in vain. It was later revealed that, “Geng is famous in the village for usually biting others when in a fight, villagers said.” Needless to say, his puppy survived.

Diana Ross may be one of the most successful and well known artists of our times but, she’s not a friend to small dogs. A new biography claims that she assaulted an airline staff member with a hat box, that happened to contain a small dog. What was she doing carrying around a small dog in a hat box anyway? Do you think she planned on turning the poor pup into a hat? The biography also claims that Ross,” upstaged Florence Ballard - who was axed from The Supremes…at Ballard’s own funeral.” Allegedly, “Ross marched from her front-row pew to the altar, took the microphone and announced, ‘Mary and I would now like to have a silent prayer.’” A moment of silence for Ms. Ross, please.

Yesterday, Stephanie asked for more photos of small dogs wearing glasses. Well Stephanie, ask and you shall receive. Lucky you, Costume Dogs, has an entire page dedicated to photos of dogs wearing glasses! This is manna from heaven. You really hit the jackpot on this one. Here’s a stellar example:

Here is some more talk about DNA profiling of dogs. Many pet owners are now calling upon DNA testing to confirm the ancestry of their mutts. Donna Haraway, a historian of science and culture at UC Santa Cruz, said, “it’s one more way of codifying the American cultural belief in genes as the foundation of everything important…I find it mildly disgusting. Then again, as the proud owner of two dogs, she added: ‘I might actually buy such a test.’” Such a tumultuous struggle! Not even Donna can resist the allure and intrigue of the cold, hard facts.

Finally, here’s an interesting article, What are dogs thinking? Maybe more than we knew. The article discusses how research shows that dogs, like humans, are capable of imitating behaviors. A group of scientists studied a group of dogs and concluded, “‘the behavior was very similar to the children who were tested in the original experiment,’ said Zsofia Viranyi, of Eotvos University in Budapest, who helped conduct the experiment, published in the journal Current Biology. ‘Whether they imitate or not depends on the context. It’s not automatic, insightless copying. It’s more sophisticated. There’s a kind of inferential process going on.’” Does this mean dogs might take over the world? We can only hope.

Mark from Dogs With Cones wrote in yesterday to alert me to some really important small dog news. The Guinness Book of World’s Records has named Ducky, a little Chihuahua, the world’s smallest dog! Weighing in at 1.4 lbs and measuring 4.9 inches tall, Lisa Messier, Ducky’s owner says she paid $5,000 for him (according to USA Today, “based on his current weight, that’s $223.21 an ounce or $1,020.41 an inch.”) “Now, under Messier’s tutelage, he’s taken to wearing a tiny suede jacket with crystals.” More photos please. You should take time to read Lisa’s letter to USA Today, which is a fascinating look into the life and times of Ducky.

This isn’t exactly small dog news, but I feel it is noteworthy nonetheless. 3 baby tigers were rejected by their mother and took a particular liking to a dog that had recently given birth to her own litter of puppies. That photo shows the mother nursing the three tigers and her own pup. Awww.

I just read a really touching story, about how a 10-year old girl (Katelyn) saved her miniature Beagle (Niki). Katelyn and Niki went down to the pasture to feed her family’s pigs, Wilbur and Charlotte. Niki attempted to crawl under an electrified gate and suffered a powerful shock that left her mini beagle body stiff and lifeless. Katelyn had a vision of a CPR chart that hangs in her lunch room and began performing CPR on Niki. Katelyn successfully brought Niki back to life! It is reported, that later that day Niki was jumping around the house as if nothing happened. Do you think Katelyn is on a path to sainthood?

Small dog genetics have been all over the news! There has been some discussion about shrinking down big dogs to make them miniature sized, but conversely does this mean that soon we will be able to create Rottweiler sized Chihuahuas? Or Yorkies the size of Great Danes? Blasphemy!
